REVIEW: Tusk Restaurant on Route 206

Tusk Restaurant - image from Tusk homepage

I’ve been away a LONG while but have a handful of topics to kick off 24/7 Mommy 2.0! The first is a review of the new TUSK restaurant in Montgomery Township, NJ on Rte 206 that opened over the Memorial Day weekend.

The opening was a slow, even glacial paced process. That lot was a construction scene for the better part of 2 years I would say. “Coming Soon” signs went up around late Winter and the web site launched a little over a month ago. I know all this because Montgomery families have been diligently watching the restaurant developments. Local moms kept each other abreast of all updates. One early rumor was that the restaurant would be a Chinese restaurant and many of us joked that we hoped to be able to dine there SOMETIME this year. There aren’t very many family-friendly restaurants in the area besides Tigers Tale or (gulp) Friendly’s so a little variety is very welcome in this neck of the woods.

The four of us went to TUSK for an early dinner on a Friday. That weekend there was complimentary valet parking. The hostess staff was young and friendly. The bar was buzzing with patrons. The main dining hall is cavernous. I usually prefer more intimate spaces although the outdoor dining looked to be cozy enough. Our waitress’ name was Nicky and she was very friendly and attentive. The decor is tasteful. You can tell no expense was spared. A lot of attention is paid to detail, especially in the well appointed bathrooms that are located downstairs.

TUSK is a fusion restaurant, with offerings from Southwestern, Thai, French and Americana cuisines (as far as I can tell). We were given bread with a butter that tasted like it was mixed with sun dried tomatoes and started our meal off with a chicken wing appetizer. It was tasty enough. They were out of the potstickers that night, they sound like something I will definitely be doubling back to. The tables are a little on the small side, so it became a little difficult to negotiate enough space for the menus, drinks and plates. Thankfully, the busboys were always right there to clear more space. My husband and I had salads as our main dish. I had the “Chipotle Salad” and my husband had the “Watermelon Salad”. They were both VERY good. The children (ages 6 and 9) had a Cheeseburger and the Fish and Chips from the children’s menu, respectively. They both said they were “OK”. They are usually more enthusiastic than that about food so I’ll have to take them on their word. For dessert we ordered the Bread Pudding and the Apple Crisp. The Bread Pudding was exactly the way I like it – a little on the dry side, but the Apple Crisp was just OK.

In all, we will definitely return, although most likely without the children since it seems like a much better Parent’s Night Out spot than a regular family joint. Thanks for finally opening!

Doh! Only in NJ: Corruption Sweep & Property Tax Appeals

new jersey

Gail Collins from the NY Times writes today in “Things Can Be Worse”:

No matter what dreadful embarrassment your state is facing, you can always console yourself by remembering that you do not live in New Jersey. On Thursday, a vast corruption sweep there netted three mayors, two state assemblymen, five rabbis and a guy who had allegedly been running an organ-trafficking business that has left swathes of the population of Moldova walking around with only one kidney.

ALSO, a few weeks back, I meant to share this enlightening NYT article regarding Property Tax Appeals:

New Jersey, which has the nation’s highest property taxes, has been besieged by tax appeals from homeownerslike Peggy Tombro, whose rambling home in Bound Brook is assessed at a value of $1.8 million but is languishing on the market with an asking price of $1.3 million. Her taxes are increasing to $53,000 a year.

“I don’t know what else to do,” said Ms. Tombro, 63, who has gone back to work selling antiques to pay her tax bill.

The High Line in NYC opens to the public on Sun. July 12

the highline

The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long elevated, steel structure built in the 1930s to carry freight trains. It currently runs from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, through the West Chelsea gallery neighborhood, ending at 34th Street, next to the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The last train ran on it in 1980.

The High Line will soon be opened to the public. To celebrate this, Target has joined with Friends of the High Line for a Street Festival this Sunday, July 12. The free, family-friendly festival will be at Ganesvoort Street (between 9th and Washington St.) from 12-5pm.

The BEST part is that the Festival will feature the world’s largest lemonade stand, served from a classic NYC water tank

Christian Louboutin pumps 60% off at Saks.com

Let’s just say I’m a few cupcakes away from my weight when I was in my 20s. I haven’t worn high heels since I was 110 pounds. Even then I never looked comfortable in them. I almost always start the ”my feet hurt” hobble within the first hour. I don’t think it’s fair that some women can wear them as if they are wearing sneakers. If I WERE to buy a fabulous pair of heels, they would most certainly be the “it” shoes by Christian Louboutin with the signature red soles. Saks.com is selling them for 60% off to skinny girls with feet that never hurt. If you buy some, don’t tell me.
